Boeing Cargo Door Actuator

A customer awarded Ingenium the entire rotary actuator development program for a new cargo door on a Boeing wide body commercial airliner.  The larger cargo door would require a heavier actuator that had increased torque requirements and a limited envelope. The design had a distinctive helical gear approach to allow for a smooth rather than ratcheted door movement. 

Because of the space, torque, and internal design, Ingenium was hired by the client to solve this challenging task. The complete development program included the following assignments:

  • Hardware design
  • Stress analysis
  • 3D modeling
  • Detail drawings

The Ingenium team consisted of a project engineer heading a multidiscipline group of mechanical, electrical, FEA, FMEA, and manufacturing engineers. Communication was emphasized throughout the 12 month process and included weekly reporting, video conference calls, and face-to face meetings for the PDR and CDR events with our client and the end customer Boeing. 

Ingenium’s engineering team worked from Rockford, Illinois over a 1 year period to develop the new actuator design. The program was a success and Ingenium is proud to have been part of this unique project and to have been selected by the prestigious client and end customer Boeing.
